Watercolour is an unpredictable medium but it doesn’t have to be scary. In this one day course I will demonstrate some of my own working methods. I will show you some techniques for working ‘wet on wet’ and some dry brush techniques.
This course would suit people with a small amount of experience in watercolour painting who want to gain confidence in working in a freer manner.

Letting go and being bold with landscape in Watercolour
Materials are not included
Please bring a packed lunch
Watercolour is sometimes an unpredictable medium, but it doesn’t have to be scary. In my watercolour workshops I aim to help students be bolder, and get the painting on the go quicker.
I will demonstrate my own painting techniques such as using large blocks of colour washes to get the painting on the move quickly and create depth.
During the day course we will experiment with working ‘wet on wet’ techniques, by keeping our paper damp; spraying the paper with a fine mist of water, and even squeezing paint directly onto the paper !
I will bring a selection of print of landscape photos for you to work from, we can develop working methods and I will help you develop your paintings using these as a starting point.
I do not stretch my paper before hand, it is not necessary as the dampness keeps the paper flat.
In the morning we will work on smaller paintings, moving onto a large composition after lunch. Please bring two A1 sized paper [see below materials list], one is for cutting up into smaller pieces, one is for you to work on a large scale.
This course would suit people with a little bit of experience in watercolour work, but would like to work in a freer manner.
I aim to develop confidence and a sense of freedom in the medium.
Materials list
Paper
At least two A1 full sized pieces of light weight watercolour paper, around 185 or 200grams. Surface NOT or ROUGH [don’t get hot pressed].
I recommend Saunders Waterford or Archers.
Paint
Pans are not suitable for this course. We will need tubes.
I recommend Windsor and Newtons range of student quality Cotman colours in 8ml tubes [ you can buy these as a pack set of 12 colours from some shops including Cass Art] or just bring a selection of colours.
If you already have a range of colours in a different brand, that’s fine, bring what you have.
Brushes
You will need a range of watercolour brushes, from small to large, synthetic hair are fine, anything except hog hair which are meant for oil.
- We will work with large washes, you will need one flat brush at least one inch wide for creating washes.
- One large round brush is very useful.
- The synthetic ‘Ken Bromely Value Round Panache brush, size 12 is ideal, or anything similar in size is great.
You can buy all of these materials online at Bromleys Art Supplies.
