WILD AND CONSTANT
we walk through a land of plenty
dull to the jewelled sky, the treasured soil
the sea is not ours to leash and whip
as we go crashing through the deep-
numbed to the softening leaves
forgetful that we too are matter,
air, water and returning dust.
I revel in the soft pleasure of seeing
luminous miracles everyday-
the abundant renewal, the wisdom of trees
the moon circles gently to earth’s nightly dance –
quiet, mysterious, wild and mighty
Rebecca Lacey – Artist Statement
Rebecca Lacey’s visual practice lies in nature, an investigation of the sacred feminine, resurrection and renewal. Evolving in layered patterns, shapes, textures and movement, Rebecca is interested in the constant movement and growth of life, often focusing on the intricacies of systems on a cellular level. Using discarded and recycled materials, she focuses on rebirth and asks the materials to hold new meanings, to collide in different ways, representing both beginnings and endings, creating a new way of looking.
Often inspired by a selection of poetic phrases, Rebecca begins by exaggerating colours from nature, using repeating patterns and forms, she composes from a place of connection and emotion allowing a feeling of chaos, randomness and joy of spontaneity to lead the work, seeking an elsewhere, rarely having a clearly planned outcome.
Rebecca’s embodied processes often involve her painting with her hands and using her body in the making of the work, providing an immediacy to the connection.
